Who is Debra Ann Afarian?
Debra Ann is the Founder and CEO of the non-profit, Helping the Behaviorally Challenging Child (HBCC). Debra Ann Afarian works to help adults understand children with behavioral challenges through a new light. Adult/Child power struggles can leave both parties frustrated with adults wondering how it could have gone differently. Behavioral difficulties are the leading causes of teacher stress and parent burnout. Being a Certified CPS® Think:Kids Expert, Debra Ann receives on-going supervision from Dr. Stuart Ablon in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Collaborative Problem Solving®. She teaches courses, workshops, holds support groups and does presentations for parents, teachers and service providers to Help the Behaviorally Challenging Child.
Since 2008 Debra Ann has regularly spoken at Parent Support Groups, CAC/SELPA Meetings, public and private school & educator conferences, as well as, psychology college students looking to enter the education field.
Debra Ann was the Greater Orange County CHADD ADHD meetings Coordinator from 2008-2021.
Since 2011 she presents “Educators and Teachers as Allies” to help schools recognize early onset neurologically driven behavioral challenges in children and adolescents. She also presents her testimonial as an advocate/activist at Parenting Programs.Debra Ann’s life experiences combined with certifications, education, community involvement, contact with families and professionals who follow best-practice, evidence-based methodology, gives her a unique perspective and insight into the challenges faced helping children with difficult-to-manage behaviors beyond parenting.
Debra Ann’s passion is to make sure that misconceptions and lack of treatment do not continue to be barriers to maximizing potential.
Once a challenging child herself, Debra Ann has been married since 1989 and is the parent of two sons, born in 1995 and 1994, the former neurotypical and the latter a twice exceptional, neurodiverse, formerly challenging child. Her dual experience is what makes her insight unique and powerful.Debra Ann is an expert working with parents because of her extensive personal training yet mostly because she was that parent and a challenging child herself who found solutions.
Debra Ann now works to help teach parents to rethink conventional approaches that work solely to “gain compliance” and “extinguish behaviors”. Debra Ann helps parents drill deeper to preserve the relationship, teach lagging skills and durably solve the unsolved problems that have been chronically occurring.
Debra Ann is passionate about sharing her experience, strength & hope to anyone who wants to listen to her story!
